Lieutenant Thomas Glahn lives as a stranger in a small fishing community in the far north of Norway. He occupies a cottage on the edge of a forest and only visits the settlement to buy powder for his gun. At night he talks to his dog and listens to the song of the birds in the forest. One day he meets Edvarda a girl from the settlement, the daughter of the local fishing magnate Herr Mack. The two are attracted to each other. For a brief period their happiness is of an ecstatic, uncomplicated kind. Then intellect begins to play its part; pride, calculation and power
