Paths of Glory is inevitably coupled with All Quiet On the Western Front as the two most heart rending and starkly realistic films about the lives of common soldiers in the trenches of the First World War. lronically, although both films are American neither deals with American soldiers. Kubrick's film relates the misery of French troops, and deals with the business of fighting in the trenches and of injustice within the French Army. The No-Man's Land in Paths of Glory is more the gulf between officers and men than the gap between enemy armies.
