The 90s band Pavement was "the world's most important and influential band", according to director Alex Ross Perry. Taking cues from the band's eclectic sound, he made a multifaceted meta-movie that resembles nothing you've seen before. Documentary, musical comedy, faux biopic, and real museum exhibition ... It's an audacious cocktail, mirroring the erratic, whimsical rock songs of the American band.

In the 1990s, Pavement stood out as one of the most distinctive American indie bands. After a long hiatus, the five-piece ensemble, led by Stephen Malkmus, has reunited in recent years. Their first major creative endeavor isn't a new album but rather a fascinating meta-film by director Alex Ross Perry. And no, the plural form Pavements is not a typo - Perry explores the band from multiple angles. He documents their reunion preparations, directs an off-Broadway jukebox musical titled Slanted and Enchanted featuring Pavement’s music, and is working on a classic biopic called Range Life. And that's not even mentioning the Pavement exhibition, which presents a fictionalized portrayal of the band. Perry blends all these elements together in a high-energy, multi-faceted project—aptly named Pavements. At times, it's a whirlwind of visuals (split screens abound!), but fear not - the overall result is a passionate tribute to what Perry himself calls the greatest and most influential band in the world. For younger music fans, familiar faces like Stranger Things star Joe Keery (who also makes music as Djo and here portrays a young Stephen Malkmus) and Nat Wolff (of The Naked Brothers Band) bring their youthful energy to the roles of eager band members.
