For Pete's Dragon, David Lowery reworked the family film of the same name from the 1970s into a modern, warm adventure for young and old. About the bond between a feral child and the forest dragon who watches over him. Children get older, trees get bigger, and so do stories.
Following his lyrical breakthrough film Ain't Them Bodies Saint (2013), director David Lowery further explored the mythical American landscape of yesteryear with a fresh remake of Disney's Pete's Dragon, enchanting the whole family. One day, a forester (Bryce Dallas Howard) and a lumberjack (Karl Urban) find the orphaned boy Pete. He has survived for years in the forest thanks to his great friend, the dragon Elliot. Their discovery inadvertently opens the hunt for the creature. The energy and emotion is perfectly captured by composer Daniel Hart in orchestral, yet authentic music. In a small but significant role, you'll recognise Robert Redford, who later starred in Lowery's The Old Man & the Gun (2018). "There's magic in the woods, if you know where to look for it", his character assures us. The film Pete's Dragon is a great place to start.
"The film transcends its familiar young-adult concerns – courage, maturity, and family – to become a piece of magic that is also about magic. In its own poignant, whimsical way, Pete’s Dragon salutes imagination’s power to help people embrace experience, not escape from it." - Film Comment
