French-Senegalese director Alain Gomis is venturing into documentary filmmaking for the first time. Rewind & Play shows Thelonious Monk and the way he was treated in the 1960s in France. Extremely enlightening cinema.
Gomis found unreleased footage of a French TV show with the genius pianist and composer Thelonious Monk in 1969. From these rushes, he reconstructs a film showing an unseen Monk, who wrestles in his own way with the stereotypes building around him.
“Any artist can attest that giving interviews can be a tough chore. For jazz pianist Thelonious Monk facing the cameras on 15 December 1969 on a small studio stage was excruciating. In Rewind & Play, Alain Gomis unearths never seen material to disclose the inner workings of a TV programme from an entirely new angle.”- Cineuropa
