The film is a caustic reality-TV satire in which residents of a Connecticut town are drafted into playing a kill-or-be-killed “game”, called The Contenders. Each week's winner returns the following week, and if they make it through three episodes, their prize is that they don't have to play anymore. Five new contenders are selected by national lottery for Series 7. Each contestant is visited at home live on television, handed a gun and assigned a cameraman. They are of all ages and from all walks of life. Once selected, refusal to participate is not an option. There are no rules, no games, no tasks and no riddles. Their mission could not be more simple: Kill the other contestants or be killed themselves. It soon becomes clear that the six contestants aren't random at all, as one of them has a tie to Dawn, the (pregnant) champion of Series 6, and another, a paranoid older man might actually be targeted for assassination by his selection for the show.
