Of all the massive movies dealing with ancient history Spartacus is the most intelligently written and directed, lacing its lavish canvas with some mora! and spiritual fibers. As the film's executive producer. Douglas raised and spent 12 million dollars and involved himself tor more than a year in production, including 167 days of actual filming. The result was a film of genuine merit, and quite apart from the believability of his performance as the slave who leads a revolt against Rome in the century before Christ, Douglas rates credit for the courage of hiring the young Kubrick to direct and Dalton Trumbo to write it. Restored version!
