He gains the help of Sidney Falco, a press agant who needs access to Hunsecker's column. Falco bribes another columnist to smear Dallas as a dope addict and communist. Later, Hunsecker instructs Falco to plant marijuana on Dallas and have him picked up by the police. Susan is save from suicide by Falco but Hunsecker misinterprets the situation and beats him up. Falco tells Susan of her brother's role in the plot and Hunsecker informs the police of Falco's planting the dope.
