Arliss realises he's in for trouble when he shows up at the "Asylum Café" and his blind date is nowhere to be found. Instead, a strange woman in black appears and badgers the nervous young man until he admits that the's waiting for Jasmine - his slender, virginal blind date. After mocking this antiquated male fantasy, the woman in black reveals that she is, in fact, Jasmine. Angry and feeling betrayed, Arliss storms off but Jasmine catches up to him and begs him to stay, claiming it's her birthday and that she doesn't want to spend it alone. He blows her off. She pulls a gun. He stays. Back inside the café, Jasmine holds Arliss hostage and tells him of her manic-depressive condition and her plan to commit suicide at sunrise.
