Tal Farlow is a tall, rawboned North Carolinian, a warm, soft-spoken man with the lines of a frontiersman in his face who is one of the most accomplished jazz guitarists playing today. In TALMAGE FARLOW, Mr Farlow's career is summed up largely through posters, album covers and photographs with musicians, including Red Norvo and Charles Mingus with whom he played as a trio in the early 50s. But the most significant insight on Mr Farlow comes from Jimmy Lyon, the pianist who is now playing at the Waldorf Astoria, who stumbled on Mr Farlow which he was in the Army and encouraged him to put music ahead of sign painting… Unlike most jazz films, this one is as much concerned with a philosophy of life as it is with music. Vet it is a very musical film music is being played constantly and Mr De Stefano has brought all the elements together to provide a revealing glimpse of Mr Farlow both as a person and musician.
