Rumpoey, a wealthy Bangkok girl evacuated to the countryside during the Pacific War, and a poor country boy called Dum, meet each other as children. A bond is formed between them when Dum saves Rumpoey’s life. But their backgrounds make real friendship impossible – until they meet again as young adults at university in Bangkok. Friendship blossoms into romance. But the love affair is blocked by a series of increasingly dramatic developments, which see Dum joining a gang headed by the ruthless Fai, and rising to almost legendary status as the Black Tiger. Rumpoey, meanwhile, thinks Dum is dead after he fails to meet her at their childhood shelter by the river. So she agrees to marry Captain Kumjorn, summoned to the province by her father, now the local governor, to spearhead the campaign against Fai and the Black Tiger. (Nick Roddick)
