Adapted by Adrian Hodges from the novel by Maggie Hemingway, The Bridge, tells the story behind a picture by impressionist painter Philip Wilson Steer. Saskia Reeves, effective in Close My Eyes, stars as Isobel, the bored and restless wife of wealthy Reg Heatherington. While vacationing with her three daughters, she meets Steer who is so inspired by her beauty that he features her in his painting of a bridge where they meet. Admiration turns to love and a brief, secret afternoon liaison, followed by mutual guilt and torment.
