After Ying Zheng becomes the King of the Qin Kingdom, he has his childhood friend Gao Jianli brought to him and forces him to compose the “Emperor Qin's Song”. Though being a prisoner, Gao falls in love with Princess Yueyang, daughter of Ying Zheng. After they make love, Gao agrees to compose the song for the purpose of protecting his compatriots from being slaughtered. Princess Yueyang is forced to be married off to someone else. In spite of this fact, Gao and the princess make love again, which shocks the whole royal court. Gao is cruelly tortured for this. The despairing Yueyang commits suicide. At Ying Zheng's enthroning ceremony, Gao attacks the king in great fury and their conflict comes to a climax.
