The story takes place in 1898 in Sudan. A British officer, Harry Faversham, refuses to obey an order from his superiors and resigns his post just before the battle of Omdurman. He soon receives four white feathers, which are symbols of cowardice, from his three best friends – among whom lieutenant Durrance - and his fiancée, Ethne Eustace, who also ends their engagement. When Harry is reported missing, Durrance tries to seduce Ethne. But when his former comrades are taken hostage by Sudanese rebels, Harry sees an opportunity to disprove the accusations. He goes undercover by donning an Arabian disguise and heads for the Sudan.
