The bell-ringer Quasimodo has been living in the cathedral of Notre-Dame since he was infant, having been imprisoned there by his evil guardian Frollo, who was responsible for Quasimodo's mother's death. After spending 20 years in seclusion. "Quasi" attends the Feast of Fools celebration and is crowned King of the proceedings. When the crown learns his true identity, they taunt and attack him, but he is rescued by the enchanting Gypsy Esmeralda. The new captain of the guard, Phoebus, is ordered to arrest Esmeralda, but loving her, urges her to find sanctuary in the cathedral. Frollo wants her burned as a witch. The freedom of Esmeralda and the Gypsies is tied to Quasi's struggle to overhome his insecurity and shame...
