England, 1941. Three young women arrive at a remote farm in Dorset. They have volunteered to help with the war effort. 21-year-old Joe also lives on the farm. The three girls could not be more different in character: Prue is lively and adventurous, Ag quiet and reserved and Stella is a dreamer whose thoughts are always with her marine officer boyfriend Philip whom she misses dreadfully. Joe is engaged to Janet, his childhood sweetheart. This doesn't stop Prue from making a play for him, nor does it stop the young man from rising to the bait. But Prue soon tires of their secret relationship; her attention is drawn instead to the pilots at the nearby air base whom she finds irresistibly attractive in their smart uniforms.
