One August morning in the early seventies, in the little village of Jerusalem deep in the Finnish countryside, old Eljas, the last local storyteller, recounts some of his many memories. He remembers the old days when Jerusalem was full of life, whereas now most of the village children have gone off to seek work elsewhere. An orange Volvo pulls up in front of Eljas' house and Pekka, his nephew, steps out with his wife, Meeri and their little daughter, Jaana. He's back from Sweden, where he now lives, for the last wedding that the village is to celebrate. But Pekka has also returned because of an idea of his: resettling in Jerusalem to resume his farmer work as a carpenter.
