Ruth Wonderly asks private eye Sam Spade to locate her missing sister, a helpless young thing who is somewhere in San Francisco with a mysterious man named Thursby. She says she has a date to meet Thursby that night and is hoping her sister will be with him. Sam instructs his colleague Miles Archer to follow Miss Wonderly and help her free her sister from the clutches of Thursby. When Miles shows up that evening he is startled to find someone is holding a gun on him. When Sam tries to find out why Miles got killed, het gets involved in a fight with a gang for possession of a jeweled statuette known as "the Maltese Falcon."
