The Old Man & the Gun pays tribute to a bygone (film) era and the career of its aging star Robert Redford whose charm has effortlessly stood the test of time. A light-hearted crime film as elegant and stylish as its gentleman/bank robber.
The Old Man & the Gun is the mostly true story of an old fox and his antics. The elderly bank robber Forrest Tucker (Robert Redford) grows into a modern folk legend at the end of the 1970s, together with his henchmen (Danny Glover and Tom Waits) - who are pursued by a determined police detective (Casey Affleck). With this heartfelt reference to his old on-screen personas, Redford (supposedly) said goodbye to the big screen. He plays his last role with just as much pleasure as Tucker, who time and again breaks the law, and shines next to Sissy Spacek as (n)ever before. For every wrinkle a twinkle in the eye, a comic note and a healthy dose of melancholy. Shot on Super 16mm film by director and screenwriter David Lowery, Redford's swan song is accompanied by a vibrant soundtrack by Daniel Hart. Rarely has nostalgia been so enjoyable.
"From the very beginning, when the debonair old man charms money from a bank with little more than a fake mustache, a trim wardrobe, and his own suave manner, Lowery’s sense of cinematic swing coalesces with the easygoing gleam and understated elegance that Redford exudes." - The New Yorker
