The Servant concerns Tony, a rather dim young man of the upper class who advertises for someone to look after him and finds a treasure in the diferential Barrett. The prospective
mistress of this establishment is Susan, Tony's fiancée, who dislikes Barrett and resents Tony's
growing dependence on him. A new element is introduced when Tony hires as a second
servant Barrett's 'sister' Vera, who seduces him. Tony discovers Vera and Barrett in bed
together and dismisses them both. Alone, Tony is unable to cope and when they meet by
chance he re-employs Barrett. Knowing his power, the latter drops his differential mask and
treats Tony with increasingly open familiarity and contempt as they pass their time in bizarre
childish games.
