Sean Price Williams' directorial debut has everything to become a modern cult classic: an enchanting protagonist, a DIY punk attitude, an eclectic soundtrack and bizarre plot twists. Sometimes magical, always provocative. Welcome to the USA.
Angelic but passive Lillian is bored beyond measure on her school trip to Washington D.C. When she strays from her classmates, she tumbles - Alice in Wonderland-style - into a schizophrenic hole called the United States. Director Sean Price Williams (D.O.P. of the Safdie brothers) and screenwriter Nick Pinkerton (mentor of FFG's Young Critics Workshop) cram their restless punk tale chock-full of cinephilic references and sharp satire. Pizzagate, crypto-fascists, clumsy 'artivists' - nothing or no one is spared. American journalists christened the duo 'edgelords', but both men call themselves - first and foremost - patriots. Infused with a great deal of South Park humour, this devilishly intelligent road trip will undoubtedly put a smile on your face.
"Sean Price Williams' punky directorial debut boasts the cinematographer's signature aesthetic and Pinkerton's roguish worldview. (...) A total blast, The Sweet East - seemingly taking cues from John Waters - is cinema at its most playfully facetious, infectiously puerile, and flagrantly transgressive." - The Film Stage
