Tristana is an 18 year old woman. When her mother dies she goes to live with her guardian Don Lope. The older Don Lope falls in love with her and soon becomes her father and lover. He faces competition from the young Italian painter Horacio. Tristana leaves the protection of Don Lope's home when she falls in love with Horacio, but she is unwilling to make a commitment to him, so she returns to Don Lope who asks for her hand. After losing a leg because of a tumer, she accepts his proposal and begins a passionless marriage despite her continued love for Horacio.
