Arguably Bergman' s most severe film and one that partly re-established his reputation. Three sisters - one dying of cancer - live in a country mansion, tended by a retainer. The dying sister (Harrie! Andersson) is hardly helped by her family - one suicidal, the other neurotic to the point of madness. It is about responses to dying and much of the film is almost 'silent' punctuated by the cries and whispers of Bergman's bleak vision. (National Film Theatre)
