Walter is a 22-year old boy who reluctantly goes back to his hometown after having spent his teens in Rome. He has no money, no work, no prospects for the future and is bitterly ironical as he hangs about the streets downtown, admiring with envy and hate the signs of other people's wealth. He dreams about having a love story worth living. Back home things are difficult. His father, who worked for 30 years in a factory, keeps asking him why "he has done nothing with his life" and his depressed mother never utters a word. He goes to University, more out of idleness than because he is really convinced of what he is doing. He is alone, proudly alone. After his aunt Caterina, the only person he trusts, dies, he finally starts his own way to become a grown-up man.
