If you're visiting the exhibition 'Ingmar Bergman: Truth and Lies' at the Caermersklooster Provincial Cultural Centre in December or January, you'll get free access to the play 'Herfstsonate' ('Autumn Sonata') in February. This play is an adaptation of Ingmar Bergman's eponymous work by Piet Arfeuille, a co-production of Theater Malpertuis and 't ARSENAAL. The main characters are played by Tania Van der Sanden, Ingrid De Vos and Wim Danckaert. The exhibition 'Ingmar Bergman: Truth and Lies' can be visited till 15th January 2012.
A daughter writes her mother a letter. The two haven't seen or spoken to each other in seven years. What starts as an uncomfortable reunion slowly turns into an unforgettable night where the pain of many years works its way up to the surface. A breath-taking confrontation about the grievances of a family, a closer look at the pain that haunts you throughout your entire life and at misunderstandings due to interpretations. But also a major act of love which, after years of powerlessness, finally gives people the courage to talk and to listen to each other. Director Piet Arfeuille likes variation. Following a few very personal, introspective performances which also tested the boundaries of theatre as an art form Arfeuille has selected a powerful repertoire piece by renowned film director Ingmar Bergman. Two 'grandes dames' of Flemish theatre agreed to take on this confrontation: Tania Van der Sanden plays the daughter, Ingrid De Vos the mother. Wim Danckaert is the father and husband. Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007) undoubtedly is one of the most influential Swedish filmmakers. His extensive film repertoire provides a thorough analysis of some of life's big questions. As a director Arfeuille aims to incorporate this analysis, whilst focusing on the significance of Bergman's work in today's world. This play is a nice complement to the exhibition which provides a unique insight into Bergman's films, plays and personal background, with particular attention to his earlier work, his artistic development and his struggle with faith. The film projections and videos at the exhibition allow visitors to gain a deeper understanding of Bergman's career, from his first films to his major international successes. Moreover, the exhibition features original scripts, notes, screenplays, sketches, posters, photos and personal papers, as well as models and costumes.
