1974 - 1st Internationaal Filmgebeuren
25 Jan 1974
Film Fest Gent was born in 1974 as the International Filmgebeuren, it was then organised by passionate film lovers Ben ter Elst (owner of Studio Skoop) and Dirk De Meyer (Universitaire Filmklub).
1975 - 2nd Internationaal Filmgebeuren
24 Jan 1975
After the success of the first edition the 2nd International Filmgebeuren takes place from the 24th to the 30th of January, 1975, once again in Cinema Select in Gent Zuid. The opening film is Bad Company by Robert Benton and on the programme are films such as Mean Streets by Martin Scorsese and Contes immoraux by Walerian Borowczyk.
1976 - 3rd Internationaal Filmgebeuren
23 Jan 1976
After a second edition with packed screenings a third Internationaal Filmgebeuren follows in 1976: from January 23 to 29 in Cinema Select and for the first time also in Studio Skoop. This edition is more turbulent than ever. The erotic documentary A History of the Blue Movie is confiscated and organisers Ben ter Elst and Dirk de Meyer are convicted of offences against morality. Because of the confiscation other pornographic films on the programme, Deep Throat and Histoires d'hommes (Good Hot Stuff), are refrained from screening.
1977 - 4th Internationaal Filmgebeuren
28 Jan 1977
After renovations of the Studio Skoop bar and the building of a second screening room (without a permit) it's time for the 4th International Filmgebeuren from January 28 to February 3, 1977. The programme consists of films such as 'O Thiasos' by Theo Angelopoulos and screening room 2 is fully devoted to the films of Akira Kurosawa.
1978 - 5th Internationaal Filmgebeuren
27 Jan 1978
Despite financial trouble Ben ter Elst en Dirk De Meyer push through and a 5th edition of the Internationaal Filmgebeuren arises. In Cinema Select El Topo by Alejandro Jodorowsky is shown and Studio Skoop screening room 1 is reserved for ''scandalous, erotic and infamous films'' such as Pink Flamingos by John Waters. In Studio Skoop 2 classics such as Metropolis by Fritz Lang are programmed.
1979 - 6th Internationaal Filmgebeuren
26 Jan 1979
With an elaborate festival team and a more sustainable financial structure the Filmgebeuren celebrates its 6th edition. The festival honours two national film cultures this year, with a focus on New German film and classical Japanese cinema.
