The Market by Ben Hopkins wins the Grand Prize of the Flemish Community for Best Film at the 35th Ghent International Film Festival. The international jury presided by Danish producer Vibeke Windeløv announced the winners on Wednesday 15 October at the Ghent city hall. Other winning films are Two-Legged Horse (Samira Makhmalbaf), Stella (Sylvie Verheyde) and O'Horten (Bent Hamer).
'The Misfortunates' opens the 36th Ghent Film Festival

The latest film by Felix van Groeningen, The Misfortunates, opens the 36th edition of the Ghent Film Festival on 6 October. A première of the film will be shown simultaneously in four of the cinemas in the Kinepolis complex and in the Vooruit arts centre.
Ghent Film Festival to Showcase Studio Ghibli and Animation Legend Miyazaki

Japanese animation film fans are in for a real treat at the 36th edition of the Ghent Film Festival (6-17 October), with its film retrospective on Studio Ghibli, Japan's premiere animation studio founded by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. The retrospective reflects the festival's Asia theme and ties in with the anime exhibition held at The Carmelite Friary - Provincial Centre of Art and Culture.
First Festival Film has arrived in Ghent!

Peng Tao's Floating in Memory is the first festival film to arrive at the festival offices. The film is selected for the World Cinema section and fits the fest focus on China. Tickets will be available starting September 22 at filmfestival.be.
Joseph Plateau Honorary Award for Kevin Costner

On 11 October, the American actor Kevin Costner will receive a Joseph Plateau Honorary Award at the Ghent International Film Festival. Costner is coming to Ghent for a concert with his country band Modern West in the Handelsbeurs, an ideal opportunity, the festival thought, to present this award. The prize is the highest award of the festival. Previous luminaries to be presented with the award include Morgan Freeman, Juliette Binoche, Jeanne Moreau, Vanessa Redgrave, Robert Altman and Sydney Pollack.
Oscar nominee Andy García to receive Honorary Award

Oscar nominated actor Andy García will be honored with the Joseph Plateau Honorary Award at the upcoming 36th Ghent International Film Festival. This prestigious award will be presented to Garcia prior to the screening of his new film City Island on October 16th.
Closing film Soul Kitchen by Fatih Akin

The Ghent Film Festival is proud to bring its 36th edition to a close with Soul Kitchen, by award-winning German-Turkish director Fatih Akin. This will be Akin's second time in Ghent, after gracing our shores in 2007 for The Edge of Heaven.

A different view with A Look Apart

Bierinckx has a keen eye for films that raise questions about culture, people and society while casting a critical glance on film as an art form.
