'When We Leave' wins the Port of Ghent Public Choice Award 2010

The German drama When We Leave by Feo Aladag won the Port of Ghent Public Choice Award at the 37th Ghent Film Festival. The film received the highest score from the festival audience (4.67 out of 5). The distributors of the film (ABC Distribution) will receive a distribution bonus of 5,000 euros. On 20 October, the international jury also selected it for the Best Film award. The Canvas Audience Award that is allocated to a film out of a shortlist of five films under the Canvas label, goes to Submarino by Thomas Vinterberg. 2010 is another record-breaking year for the film festival with 132,000 visitors. The increase of 20% in web sales compared to last year is also impressive. The concerts in Kuipke accounted for 6,000 visitors.
European Film Academy announces nominees European Film Awards 2010

At the Seville European Film Festival the European Film Academy and EFA Productions announced the nominations for the European Film Awards 2010. The more than 2,300 EFA Members will now vote for the winners which will be presented during the Awards Ceremony on 4 December in Tallinn/Estonia.
Film music city Ghent will present a unique concert in Tallinn on 2 December

On 2 December 2010 the Ghent Film Festival will present in cooperation with the city of Ghent, the province of East Flanders, the Flemish Community and Fluxys a concert in Tallinn featuring film music by Gabriel Yared, Shigeru Umebayashi and Arvo Pärt. The concert will take place on the eve of the European Film Awards in the Estonian capital, which is also the European Capital of Culture 2011 and a twin town of Ghent. Gabriel Yared will attend the concert as guest of honour. Moreover, on 4 December, the European Film Academy as part of the annual presentation of the prestigious European film awards will present him with the European Achievement in World Cinema Award. As usual the excellent musicians of the Brussels Philharmonic - the Orchestra of Flanders are on hand as performers. Dirk Brossé will conduct. The concert will be broadcast on the classical music channel of the Estonian State Radio.

The Ghent Film Festival presents "Maestros of Suspense" at Music Centre De Bijloke on Wednesday 12 October at 8 p.m. This thrilling concert features film music by Bernard Herrmann and Franz Waxman, who are both inextricably linked with the iconic Alfred Hitchcock, but managed to put the "thrill" in thrillers even without his input. The programme includes, among other pieces, Herrmann's music for Psycho, Vertigo and Taxi Driver, as well as Waxman's music for Rebecca, Rear Window and Sunset Boulevard. The works will be performed by the National Orchestra of Belgium, conducted by Dirk Brossé. Suspense guaranteed!
New John le Carré film opens 38th Ghent Film Festival

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, a film by the Swedish director Tomas Alfredson, based on John le Carré's bestseller of the same name, will open the 38th Ghent Film Festival on Tuesday 11 October. The spy film got an extremely enthusiastic reception at the recent Venice Film Festival. In the leading roles stars like Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, John Hurt, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Ciarán Hinds and Toby Jones shine.
Isabelle Huppert presents her latest film at the Ghent Film Festival

French art-house cinema star, Isabelle Huppert will be in Ghent on October 18th to present her latest film at the Ghent Film Festival. Huppert stars in Mon Pire Cauchemar alongside Belgian national treasure, Benoît Poelvoorde (C'est Arrivé Près de chez Vous, Rien à Déclarer). The director is Anne Fontaine, who previously wrote and directeCoco Avant Chanel as well as writing the script for Atom Egoyan's thriller, Chloe.
"Ingmar Bergman: Truth and Lies" exhibition at the Ghent Film Festival

On the initiative of and in collaboration with the Ghent Film Festival, the Province of East Flanders presents "Ingmar Bergman: Truth and Lies". The exhibition, organized by the Deutsche Kinemathek - Museum für Film und Fernsehen, Berlin, in association with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Beverly Hills, California, delves into the career and personal life of the legendary Swedish director. It will run from 14 October 2011 to 15 January 2012 in the Caermersklooster - Provincial Cultural Centre in Ghent, Belgium.
Ghent Film Festival announces programme 38th edition

Today, at restaurant Pakhuis in Ghent, the Ghent Film Festival announced the complete programme of its 38th edition, which runs from 11 to 22 October. Once again it includes over a hundred high-quality films and special events on the fringes of cinema. Highlights are the 11th World Soundtrack Awards, the Maestros of Suspense concert and the exhibition about Ingmar Bergman at the Caermersklooster Provincial Cultural Centre. Star guests this year are the Canadian director Norman Jewison, who will receive a Joseph Plateau Honorary Award, the Italian disco pioneer Giorgio Moroder, who will be honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and the French actress Isabelle Huppert, who will present her newest film, Mon Pire Cauchemar (My Worst Nightmare). More than 150 international guests will be attending the festival.
