Belgian Films at Film Fest Gent 19 Sep 2013
The Belgian films this year are a showcase for new talents and quirky filmmakers with a highly distinctive approach to the medium. Caroline Strubbe returns to Film Fest Gent with ‘I Am the Same, I Am An Other’, her follow-up to ‘Lost Persons Area’, and two debut films confirm the diversity of the new Flemish films d'auteur: ‘82 Days in April’ by Bart Van den Bempt and ‘Drift’ by Benny Vandendriessche & Dirk Hendrikx. From French-speaking Belgium, we have ‘L’étrange couleur des larmes de ton corps’, the new sophisticated giallo homage by the duo Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani. We are also screening ‘Stop The Pounding Heart’, a Belgian co-production.

Alongside the traditional World Soundtrack Awards and our concert based on the music from the films of Scorsese, this year we are also organising a unique anniversary concert. Forty fellow composers created a composition together for which they each wrote one minute of music. On Wednesday 16 October, this unique piece of music will be performed live at De Bijloke, but those who want to get a glimpse behind the scenes can now buy tickets to attend the dress rehearsal! The Selfish Giant by Clio Barnard wins Grand Prix for Best Film at the 40th Film Fest Gent! 16 Oct 2013
The Selfish Giant directed by Clio Barnard was awarded the Grand Prix for Best Film at the 40th edition of Film Fest Gent. This was announced on Wednesday 16 October at Ghent City Hall by the international festival jury, presided by director István Szabó. The other films that were presented with an award were A Touch of Sin by Jia Zhangke (Georges Delerue Prize for Best Music) and the short films Whale Valley by Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson (winner of the European Short Film Competition – Film Fest Gent’s nomination for the 2014 European Film Awards) and Zinneke (Nationale Loterij Prijs for Best Belgian Student Short) by Rémi Allier. A special mention went to The Missing Picture by Rithy Panh and Harmony Lessons by Emir Baigazin.
