'Saint Omer' by Alice Diop and 'Drii Winter' by Michael Koch collect top prizes at Film Fest Gent 2022

French filmmaker Alice Diop's staggering courtroom drama Saint Omer has been awarded the Grand Prix for Best Film at the 49th edition of Film Fest Gent. The International Jury was very taken by how Diop uses the setting of a courtroom to explore shame, demonisation and racism within a society. Michael Koch's Swiss film Drii Winter won the Georges Delerue Award for Best Music, thanks to an evocative and poetic score by Tobias Koch and Jannik Giger. Special Mentions in the festival's Official Competition go to Ukrainian Oscar entry Klondike and Belgian co-production Tengo sueños eléctricos.

Jonny Greenwood, Nicholas Britell and Billie Eilish among the winners at 22nd World Soundtrack Awards

Jonny Greenwood has won the Film Composer of the Year Award at the 22nd World Soundtrack Awards Ceremony & Concert on Saturday 22 October at Music Centre De Bijloke in Ghent. Nicholas Britell received the Television Composer of the Year Award. “No Time to Die” from No Time to Die was presented with the Best Original Song Award, while Drive My Car composer Eiko Ishibashi took home the Discovery of the Year Award. Joseph Metcalfe, John Coda and Grant Kirkhope were honoured with the Public Choice Award and The Penelopes composed the Best Original Score for a Belgian Production. Bruno Coulais received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Young Critics Review: Un beau matin

During the Young Critics Workshop (in collaboration with Cinea and the online film magazine photogénie) at Film Fest Gent, five aspiring film critics (ages between 18 and 26) from Belgium and from abroad write reviews and essays on our festival films.
Festival audience crowns stop-motion film 'Oink' as winner of North Sea Port Audience Award

On Monday 24 October, the very last prize of the 49th edition of Film Fest Gent was handed out. The festival audience voted Mascha Halberstad's charming stop-motion film Oink as the winner of the North Sea Port Audience Award. The animated film was already the big winner at the Golden Calves in Utrecht, taking home awards for Best Film, Best Direction and Best Production Design. Oink is the official Dutch Oscar entry in the Best Animated Feature category.

Composers for peace: Kilar, Glass and Brossé

In December, Film Fest Gent will present the Sinfonietta Cracovia Orchestra to the Belgian audience through the concert series Composers for peace, performing the music of the internationally renowned Polish composer Wojciech Kilar, the American composer and pianist Philip Glass and the Belgian composer, conductor and Film Fest Gent music director Dirk Brossé. The concert is part of the international Kilar 90 tour.
