'Here' by Bas Devos selected for Official Competition Film Fest Gent 11 Aug 2023
Here by Bas Devos will have its Belgian premiere in the Official Competition of the 50th edition of Film Fest Gent. The film previously had its world premiere at the Berlinale, where it won the top prize in the Encounters section. It was also announced today that Here will be screened in the Wavelengths section in Toronto and in the Main Slate programme of the New York Film Festival, a remarkable achievement for a Flemish film.
'The Last of Us', 'Baldur's Gate III', 'Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarök' and 'Star Wars Jedi' composers to attend PRESS PLAY: Music in Games 17 Aug 2023
Composers Stephanie Economou (Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarök), Borislav Slavov (Baldur's Gate III, Divinity: Original Sin II), Gordy Haab (Star Wars Battlefront, Star Wars Jedi), Stephen Barton (Star Wars Jedi, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare) and Gustavo Santaolalla (The Last of Us) will be present at Film Fest Gent's game music concert PRESS PLAY: Music in Games on Thursday 19 October at Capitole Ghent. During the concert, a selection of their work will be performed by Brussels Philharmonic conducted by Dirk Brossé. Gustavo Santaolalla will accompany the orchestra with his ronroco. Moreover, during the WSA Film Music Days from 19 to 21 October, the composers will talk about their métier during various panels and masterclasses.
Fien Troch's 'Holly' to open 50th edition of Film Fest Gent 22 Aug 2023
Holly, Fien Troch's fifth feature, is the official opening film of the 50th anniversary edition of Film Fest Gent and will kick off the festival on Tuesday 10 October. The film is an intriguing portrait of a 15-year-old girl named Holly. After she seems to have predicted a deadly school fire, people begin to seek out Holly for consolation. Troch's latest is also a part of the Official Competition of the Venice Film Festival.
Studio Ghibli's 'The Boy and the Heron’to close 50th edition Film Fest Gent 30 Aug 2023
Are you ready to be deeply moved and enchanted? The closing film of the anniversary edition of Film Fest Gent is the long-anticipated new title from Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke, The Red Turtle)! What's more, the film was made by none other than Japanese anime master Hayao Miyazaki, the man behind beloved animated films like My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away. The Boy and the Heron was received as a mature, complex masterpiece in Japan. For the first time, Film Fest Gent is making the official award ceremony preceding the closing film and the reception afterwards open to the public.

A lot of notable artists dedicated themselves to film music last year, and now have a chance to win prizes at the prestigious 23rd edition of the World Soundtrack Awards. The list of nominees includes both WSA newcomers, such as Japanese band RADWIMPS & Kazuma Jinnouchi, and saxophonist Colin Stetson (Arcade Fire, Bon Iver), and WSA favourites such as Nainita Desai (who, among others, won the Discovery of the Year Award in 2021). This year, the British composer picked up another nomination, this time for an entirely new award: the WSA Game Music Award. All nominees for WSA2023 have now been announced.

Stephanie Economou, Borislav Slavov en Eiko Ishibashi headline WSA Film Music Days 13 Sep 2023
Scoring for video games is an aspect of composing for screen that is crucial to this year’s WSA Film Music Days from 19 until 21 October. Stephanie Economou (Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarök) and Borislav Slavov (Baldur’s Gate 3) have extensive experience as game composers, and will be sharing their expertise. They will be accompanied by other composers such as Gordy Haab & Stephen Barton (Star Wars Jedi: Survivor) and Austin Wintory (Journey). Japanese multi-instrumentalist and composer Eiko Ishibashi will be joined on stage by frequent collaborator director Ryûsuke Hamaguchi to talk about their Creative Partnership.

For Film Fest Gent's golden jubilee, the festival is launching 2x25: 25 composers were invited to write a short piece of music. Subsequently, 25 filmmakers were inspired by the music to make a short film. The result fits perfectly within the DNA of Film Fest Gent: 25 sublime symbioses of music and cinematography, of emerging talent and established names, and of resounding names and festival favourites.

For the unique 2x25 project, the festival asked 25 composers to compose a short piece of music, after which 25 filmmakers made a short film. The result: 25 exceptional films where the music inspired the form, narrative and texture.
